Driving in France with a foreign driver’s license
Driving in France with a foreign driver’s license is possible for : :
- All holders of a European driver’s license
- Foreign nationals holding a student residence permit
- All foreign nationals from outside Europe, but only for one year
At the end of this year, they must either:
- Apply for the exchange of their foreign license
- Pass the French driving exam (theoretical and practical test) to drive freely in France.

What are the conditions for exchanging a non-European driver’s license?
In order for your exchange application to be accepted, certain criteria must be met:
- The request concerns a license obtained in a country where you have resided for more than 6 months
- The license must be valid, have no demerit points, restrictions or be suspended in the country of origin
- The exchange request must mention the same medical information as the one written on the foreign license
- It must be done before the end of the first year of residence in France.
